Russias Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov
Russias foreign minister says the West is pushing West Asia to the brink of a "big war" as Washington keeps its unconditional support for Israels relentless bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip.
"Now we see how the Anglo-Saxons are literally pushing the Middle East to the brink of a big war," Sergei Lavrov said in reference to the US and its Western allies. Historically, the Anglo-Saxon camp includes English-speaking states and Western colonial powers.
The top Russian diplomat made the remarks while addressing a panel discussion during the Russia International Exhibition and Forum in Moscow on Monday.
Lavrov said the Western approach has been "fully manifested" in Ukraine, Iraq, Libya and Syria.
The Russian minister said the West is accustomed to "solving its own problems at the expense of others, to exploiting other peoples resources."
Elsewhere in his remarks, Lavrov said NATO is a "relic of the past" and the alliance is "spreading its tentacles" all over the world, which may lead it to "overstrain" itself.
"You cant so brazenly and persistently impose your hegemony on everyone, times are not the same."
Senior officials in Moscow have accused the West of plotting to "destroy and dismember" Russia, saying the bloc is walking in the footsteps of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
Russia has already declared its support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and has thrown its weight behind the United Nations Security Council resolutions that mandate that prospect.
On October 30, Russias President Vladimir Putin said the United States and its Western allies were to blame for the carnage in Gaza. He said the "ruling elites of the US" and their satellites stand behind the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The United States has been vetoing resolutions that either hold the Israeli regime responsible for its atrocities or call for cessation of hostilities.
Putin had announced earlier in October that Moscow fully supports the establishment of a Palestinian state.
More than 10,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli bombardment of Gaza since October 7 following the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm by the Palestinian resistance groups.
